The Crew

The Crew - Preview

There's been a renewed interest in racing games lately, and the more online and connected the game is, the more infested in it we are, and it's this gap that Ubisoft are aiming to fill with The Crew.

Set in a fictional North America which takes 90 minutes to drive across, The Crew is an open-world racer, with a focus on multiplayer but still including a singleplayer campaign.

The map is divided into five regions, each with their own weather and style, so the Mountain States have a lot of snow (and mountains of course) while The South will be a lush garden like environment and each city within the regions have their own style again, like New York City or Las Vegas.

If you don't fancy the 90 minute drive from one coast to the next, you can take a plane or train instead or if you're going to a place you've already visited, you can instantly fast travel with no loading screens.

As the name implies, you can form a crew with three of your friends and call them in to help you out on missions you're struggling with, compete with them on leaderboards or just help each other out by winning races as even when one of you wins, you call gain EXP.

Your crew can then join one of the five Factions, where every win or loss either helps or hinders your faction throughout the fictional continent.

There are a number of skill challenges too including jumps, (hill) climbs and escaping the police. Each time you complete a skill challenge, you increase your ability to do those kinds of things, so after a number of escape challenges, escaping the cops should be a breeze.

Cars will be customisable too, both inside and out, so you'll be able to change the engine to boost performance or change the body kit and colour just for looks, and all the major car manufacturers are here like Nissan, BMW, Ferrari, Lamborghini and more.

The Crew is shaping up to be very interesting, an open-world, persistent car RPG (or CarPG as Ubisoft are calling it) and could very well be the next big thing in the racing genre.
